Allergic Reactions & Sensitivity TestingUpdated a month ago

Your safety is extremely important to us, and we want you to feel confident using our products — whether you’re simply researching possible allergens or have experienced a reaction in the past. SIMPLER Hair Color was created because we experienced skin sensitivities with other brands and wanted to make a gentler formula. That’s why you won’t find ingredients such as PPD in our products.

While many people who react to PPD-based dyes (like most drugstore brands) find they do much better with our formula, it’s still possible to be allergic to one or more of our ingredients. Allergies are unique to each person and can even change over time, so we recommend reviewing our ingredient list and doing a patch test before coloring.

Our Product Options & Allergy Risk Levels

We offer three different hair coloring options, each with varying likelihood of triggering a reaction. While all hair dye can potentially cause an allergy, here’s how our products compare:

  1. Full Coverage ColorMedium risk compared to our other products.

    • Contains TDS (a gentler alternative to PPD) and peroxide developer.

    • Longer application time and higher developer strength.

  2. Partial Coverage ColorLow risk.

    • Still contains TDS and peroxide developer, but at a lower concentration.

    • Requires a shorter application time than Full Coverage.

  3. Simpler Touch (Temporary Color)No risk.

    • Does not contain developer.

    • Uses a gentler, direct-deposit dye that is far less likely to cause reactions.

If You’ve Had a Reaction

If you’ve had a reaction to one of our products:

  • Stop using the product immediately.

  • Consult a medical professional for advice and treatment.

  • Contact us for a full refund, or if you'd like to try one of our other products, less likely to cause reactions, we will send you your preferred option free of charge.

How to Perform a Skin Sensitivity Test (Patch Test)

We strongly recommend performing a skin sensitivity test before every application — even if you’ve used our products before without issues.

Here’s how to test:

  1. Choose a small area of skin behind your ear (this skin is most similar to your scalp and face).

  2. Wash and dry the area.

  3. Mix a small amount of color and developer (for Full or Partial Coverage), or use a small dab of Simpler Touch.

  4. Apply to the test spot and leave it on for 30 minutes.

  5. Rinse the area thoroughly with soap and water, then pat dry.

  6. Wait 48 hours and monitor the area for any redness, itching, swelling, or irritation.

  7. If any reaction occurs during the waiting period, do not use the product.

You can find full patch test instructions in our instruction booklet and can view an electronic version of this here.

Keep in mind, a successful sensitivity test does not guarantee that no reaction will occur, we recommend using caution when continuing with your initial application, applying the color sparingly where possible and avoiding full skin contact.

We truly hope this information helps you make the best choice for your needs, whether you’re trying our products for the first time or looking for a safer alternative after a reaction. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions your safety and satisfaction mean a lot to us.
